Story:
Earth Day 2007
Earth Day 2007 in Bakersfield California was a joint effort with California State Park Foundation (CSPF), Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), and the City of Bakersfield Recreation & Parks Department.
This year’s event was held at Beach Park. The event started at 8:00 a.m. with refreshments donated by Fruit Guys, Star Bucks and PG&E. Georgia Smith, with CSPF addressed the volunteers on the value of Earth Day and the importance of the trees especially in an urban environment. Patrick Denney, from PG&E spoke on the practice of “right tree in the right place”. Darin Budak from City of Bakersfield talked about the City Urban forest program and the proper maintenance of trees and safety while planting. A planting demonstration was given by Patrick Denny and Race Slayton from City of Bakersfield.
There were a total of 85 volunteers. The City of Bakersfield Urban Forestry Section assisted the volunteers to insure proper planting. Sixteen 24” box trees and ten 15 gallon native trees were planted in various locations throughout the park. Trees will be maintained by city staff. All tools, stakes and ties were supplied by the city. Planting was completed by 10:30 AM. Volunteers then walked the bike path picking up trash on the way to Yokuts Park where the “Keep Bakersfield Beautiful” event was being held.
