Mill Creek Linear Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony - Central Park Farmers Market Kick Off

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday, May 18, 2010 to officially open the “Mill Creek Linear Park”.  Mayor Harvey Hall, Councilmember Sue Benham, City Manager Alan Tandy, and other city officials were present during the ceremony. Mill Creek Linear Park consists of a portion of the Kern Island Canal from Golden State Avenue to California Avenue, this has been transformed into a “natural” creek with a 1.5 mile walking path, creation of a pond in Central Park, and vacation of vehicular access rights on 17th Street at the canal through a five-phase construction project.  Improvements were generated with input from the Greater Bakersfield Vision 2020 process and refined in the Downtown Design Charrettes, where community members recommended extending park improvements along the Kern Island Canal.  The walking path features the new facade wall at Mexicali Restaurant. 

Immediately following the ceremony, the City kicked off its first Farmers Market with nearly 20 certified farmers from Central California.  Additional activities to commemorate the event included:  Garden Pathway’s E3 Performers, Black Gold Cloggers, Modern Jazz  Trio, showcase of City services, and “Explore Mill Creek” Hunt.   

Farmers Market is produced by the City of Bakersfield Recreation and Parks in cooperation with Kern County Public Health and Golden Enlighten Certified Farmers Market.  The certified market is sponsored by Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program.  It is Senior program certified and accepts WIC FM coupons.     

Over the years, farmers markets have become more popular as more people are focused on eating local foods and reducing their carbon footprint. 

The market will be open every Tuesday, 4 – 7 p.m., through November 9, rain or shine.
