About the Department
There are two divisions within the Development Services Department.

The Planning Division provides land use planning, zoning and land division services, including services required for environmental review of public and private projects.   These services are provided consistent with the requirements of the California Government Code and the City’s adopted policies, ordinances and standards.

The Building Division issues permits for construction projects, provides inspection and plan check services for residential, commercial and industrial projects and administers the City's Code Enforcement activities.  These services are provided consistent with California building code requirements and the City’s adopted policies, ordinances and standards.

Incorporated on January 11, 1898, the City of Bakersfield is an emerging urban center encompassing 140 square miles at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley.  Bakersfield is growing at a rate of three percent per year with a current population of over 330,000 in a metropolitan area of approximately 500,000.  A variety of sporting events for both spectator and participant, historical sites and cultural opportunities are available.  Bakersfield is 113 miles north of Los Angeles, 291 miles south of San Francisco and 148 miles east of Pismo Beach.  There is a fine school system, including twenty-five high schools, one junior college and one state university.  Reasonably priced housing is available throughout the city.  The City of Bakersfield offers an excellent place to live and work.
