GIS User Support

  • ESRI ArcGIS Desktop - This is the main application used to view, create and maintain the city's GIS layers. It integrates graphic or "spatial" data in the form of maps with descriptive or attribute information from an organization's internal databases. There are 3 components:

    • ArcInfo - ArcInfo is used mainly by the GIS Department to create and maintain the city's layer. IT is also used for high-end analysis and map creation.

    • ArcEditor - This software available GIS users in other city department, offers data editing and productivity tools for GIS end users throughout the city

    • ArcView - This basic application offers a variety of intuitive map composition tools that lets users create presentation-quality maps.

  • DataBases - SQL is the primary database software used by the City. MS Access is also used.

  • GIS Dictionary - The dictionary includes definitions for 980 terms compiled from a variety of sources which either relate directly to GIS or which GIS users may come across in the course of their work.

  • Map Machine - National Geographic's interactive mapping tool.

  • EnviroMapper - a tool developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to map various types of environmental information, including air releases, drinking water, toxic releases, hazardous wastes, water discharge permits, and Superfund sites.

  • ArcView Translators - tools for translation to and from the Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) ArcView format.

  • MapCruzin.com GIS software - freely available GIS software and resources.

  • Microsoft MapPoint - integrates with Microsoft Office.

  • Shapelib - source code and documentation for an Application Program Interface in C to read and write ESRI shape files.
